AUSCHWITZ BIRKENAU THE CONCENTRATION CAMP

The former concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau is an obligatory place for everybody who travels to Poland. It is located about 60 km away from Krakow. During the Nazi occupation, it was the “death factory” where over 1,1 million people were murdered during the Second World War. Transports of prisoners were brought from all the European countries invaded by the Nazis.
Auschwitz consisted of three main camps: Auschwitz I – administrative center, Auschwitz II (Birkenau) – extermination camp and Auschwitz III (Monowitz) – work camp. Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II are open for visitors.

 

The tour is divided into two parts. The first one lasts 2 hours and will cover the permanent exhibition and original buildings of Auschwitz I, including barracks, gas chambers, the camp detention house and the Wall of Death. The second part lasts one hour and covers Birkenau where you can see the remnants of the second extermination camp such as a watchtower, prisoners’ barracks and the ramp where trains full of prisoners were being brought.

 

Please notice that there is no lunch break during the tour.
You are allowed to take photos in the Museum.
The tour is not recommended for children under the age of 14.
Over 2 million people visited the camp last year so book your visit in advance.
Duration: 7 hours
Maximum size of any baggage allowed at the Auschwitz Birkenau Museum is 30x20x10 cm.
